Last weekend, the city of Franklin hosted the 31st Annual Dickens of a Christmas Festival in the heart of downtown.  The festival was a great way for people to get into the holiday spirit while supporting our Tennessee Main Streets and showcasing what holidays are like in Tennessee. Planned and organized by The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, the group organizes everything from sponsors to street layout to scheduling performers each year. Walking the crowded streets you couldn’t help but be immersed in the feeling of holiday spirit.

Dickens of a Christmas is a unique yet popular theme and festivalgoers enjoyed seeing Dickens characters throughout the event from the Ghost of Christmas Future, to Tiny Tim, and even Scrooge himself. Those attending the festival were also encouraged to dress in Victorian era clothing to add to the ambiance of the event.

Many activities took place throughout the two-day festival. There were local and regional vendors that sold one-of-a-kind crafts that are perfect for holiday gifts for friends and family. There were also scheduled performances during both days. This year’s festival included performances by the Pull Tight Theater Actors Guild, Southern Academy of Irish Dance and Flat Creek Dancers. Saturday night was closed with a town sing of classic Christmas carols.

Franklin puts on many festivals throughout the year but Dickens of a Christmas is the festival that brings in the most out of town guests. Last year, 50,000 people were in attendance and it is estimated that this year 60,000 people attended.

With only one week remaining until Christmas, holiday events are in full swing throughout the state. To find an event near you, visit http://www.tnvacation.com/calendar/
