Tennessee is known around the world for guitar manufacturing with big names like Gibson located right here in the Volunteer State. But have you ever wondered what goes into making these well-known instruments? That’s where Guitar Build Workshop comes in. Based in the Germantown neighborhood of Nashville, Guitar Build Workshop has been helping people from across the country and the globe learn how to build their own custom guitars. This classroom-style workshop lets students take a guitar body and neck and turn it into something special, while learning the skills it takes to make your own guitar.

Guitar Build Workshop has had operations in Nashville since 2012 and is the perfect fit for Music City. Everyone in Tennessee and Nashville seems to have a connection to music in one way or another, and Guitar Build Workshop gives music buffs a skill that they might not have otherwise.

“This is Music City, and Guitar Build Workshop fits in perfectly,” Laura Robinson of Guitar Build Workshop said. “What’s more Nashville than building your own guitar? In this town everyone plays or wants to play. Guitar Build Workshop gives everyone, no matter what your skill level, a chance to have a one-of-a-kind custom-made guitar. It also gives you bragging rights to say you did so.”

The class, which includes an average of four to six participants and an instructor, takes a deep dive into the craftsmanship of custom-built guitars. You begin the class with a guitar body, which is cut using a CNC machine at Guitar Build Workshop, and then start sanding. After sanding, you take your guitar to the staining station and that’s where the customization begins. Participants get to show their true colors when it comes to staining. There are tons of stains that you can choose from, from bright green to neutral brown. There is no limit to what you can do to your guitar, but don’t worry, the instructor will make sure your guitar looks great and helps out along the way.

Once you’re done with staining, you start assembling the guitar yourself. This includes adding the pick guard, neck and bridge. You even get to learn how to string your own guitar while the instructor gives you the ins and outs of how to get your guitar to sound perfect. The last step is tuning and making sure the tone of the guitar is on point and after that, you get to take your custom-built guitar home with you.

The class is designed for musicians and music lovers alike to come together and do an activity that is quintessential Music City and learn a new skill while you’re at it.

The employees of Guitar Build Workshop are what make this business thrive. While taking the class, no matter your skill level, you feel like a professional and the instructors of the class make everyone feel like a master craftsman. It’s also a great team-builder.

“The confidence they gain as they put together a guitar they made is why I love doing what I do,” Laura added. “This class will challenge you. I love to see how people grow and believe in themselves. We have companies that use the class for team building. You cannot explain the feeling at the end of the day when you look down at the one-of-a-kind guitar that you have hand built.”

So, if you’re someone that is a pro guitar building that just wants to enhance your skill, or someone who wants to learn something totally new, Guitar Build Workshop is for you.

Guitar Build Workshop currently holds classes every Saturday, but are looking to open additional classes a few days a week to keep up with growing demand. If you are interested in taking a class, visit guitarbuildworkshop.com/.
